Henri Matisse

Matisse was born on December 31, 1869, in Cateau-Cambrésis, in the North of France, storekeepers' family installed(settled) in bohain in Aisne (seed trade) today, the Blondeel florist shop and seed trade 26 street of the castle in bohain from it vermandois. It(he) studied the right for the faculty(power) of Paris ( 1887-1889 ). In Gustave Moreau's workshop(studio), where this one welcomed him(it) having appreciated the drawings, it(he) copied the works of the academic tradition. The youth work revealed its taste for the naturalism felted by Nabis. Of a journey in Brittany and in Corsica, it(he) studied the possibilities of the landscape in the alder(ell) of a palette going to clear up under the imprint of the impressionists.

Matisse's artistic liberation, in terms of manipulation of colours for the depiction of the forms and the organization of the plans in the space, was the decisive influence of Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, whose works it(he) studied closely, from 1899 , through the collector John Russel. The clothes(canvases), still lives and bare feminine, find the warm tones of it and the strict construction following the plan of the picture(table). Crossing(spending) the summer, 1904 in Saint-Tropez at the painter Paul Signac, Matisse discovered the process of the pointillism, new technique of juxtaposition of small touches (points or short lines(features)) of pure pigment to create, in the glance of the spectator, an optical mixture intense bus protected from the aléats of the chromatic miscellany on the palette. It(he) adopted him(it) in Luxury, Peace and Sensual delight (on 1904, museum of Orsay, Paris) where a common symbolist subject meets a modern treatment: A fragmented touch, intense colours (red and yellow) and the use of a thick ring to mark the volumes. The strong colours and the attention in the construction of the plans allow the relief of the motives not to dissolve in the methodical division. In the following clothes(canvases), Matisse abandoned bit by bit the divisionnisme for the benefit of return to the drawing which encircles and by-passes less and less imitative colours. In Madam Matisse's portrait (said the green Line, on 1905, Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen), the forehead(front) and the nose of his wife are represented by a wide band(strip) of a brilliant green. Same year, Matisse showed his(her) works in the third Autumn lounge(show), gathering(reuniting) some of his(her) companions, as André Derain and Vlaminck's Maurice. They were nicknamed by mockery "! Wildcats(fawns)! ", because of the violent use of the colour which built by big mass the space of the cloth(canvas).

In 1908, Matisse received a command(order) of a Russian collector, Sergueï Chtchoukine: wall panels on the subject of the dance and the music (both finished in 1911, today kept(preserved) to the museum of the Hermitage in Saint-Petersburg). These monumental panels mark an inflection in its route(course). Confronted with the headaways(overhangs) of the cubism (a painting which builds the forms by a geometrical depiction of the elementary volumes, and which it(he) touches without wanting to guarantee), Matisse prefers a generic volume, cut from the colour, abandoning the work of the touch and privileging the contrast between aplats to the representational lines. So the panel of the Dance is divided vertically by a wavy line: in the top, an aplat azure for the sky!; in the bottom, a green aplat for the hill. On this abstract bottom, arabesques encircle the pink bodies of the artists in a musical festoon. Matisse's art in the sensitive structure of colours, volumes and lines conquers an intuitive harmony.

Matisse brought back(reported) of journeys in Morocco and in Tahiti a taste marked for clear landscapes and fluids, the rich bodies of the odalisques, the warm colours from the exotic inside. Installed(settled) in Nice then in Vence, it(he) illustrated in 1943 the book Jazz by cut gouaches. This technique of the division, which it(he) used abundantly till the end, made(did) the synthesis of its plastic past searches(researches). In these joinings(assemblies) of fragments of paper in the sensational colours stuck on a cloth(canvas), the drawing became the colour, itself being the volume. From 1946 till 1948, it(he) received an official command(order) for the decoration of the chapel Marie du Rosaire de Vence, whom it(he) finished in 1951. It(he) executed stained glasses and all the priestly elements following principles of compositions close to cut gouaches. So the painting, which he wanted meditative and harmonious, found its application at the same moment in the real space and in the time the catholic rites.

Henri Matisse died in Nice on November 3, 1954. A museum dedicated to its work was inaugurated in Cateau-Cambrésis in 1950.
